Get oriented before money gets complicated.
Use this page to know what to ask an employer, bank or tax authority. It cannot calculate your tax, assess your work rights or tell you which benefits you qualify for.
Not tax, financial, employment or immigration advice.Personal rules depend on the facts and can change. Use Vero, Migri, Kela, your employer, your bank or a qualified adviser for decisions about your situation.
Starting a job
- Check you have the right to work in the particular role before starting; requirements depend on your status and job.
- Ask for a written contract and review duties, pay, hours, start date, probation period and applicable collective agreement.
- Ask which identity, tax and bank details your employer needs and how to provide them safely.
- Ask how shifts, holidays, sick leave, payslips and workplace induction work.
- Keep a copy of your contract and your own record of hours and payslips.

Tax card and tax questions
A tax card (verokortti) tells the payer how much tax to withhold. Whether and what kind of card you need, and your tax residency, depend on your facts. International moves can involve tax treaties and income from more than one country.
- Check Vero’s instructions for your exact arrival and income situation.
- Ask the employer which tax details they need before payroll begins.
- Keep your estimated income information current using Vero’s official channel.
- Ask Vero about uncertainty; do not rely on a generic online estimate for a personal filing.

Banking and digital identification
Each bank decides its account-opening checks and acceptable documents. A Finnish bank account may help with ordinary payments, and some online public services support strong electronic identification, but there are alternatives for people who cannot use that method.
- Ask your chosen bank about identity documents, address evidence, appointment and fees.
- Never give another person your online banking codes, password or PIN.
- Use only the official service page when signing in to a bank or authority.

Build a first-month budget
Before arrival, list the costs that apply to you rather than relying on a generic “cost of living” figure. Include housing, deposit, utilities, food, transport, phone/internet, insurance, healthcare and one-off household items.
- Separate one-time setup costs from monthly bills.
- Check what rent includes and when deposits are due.
- Ask about student, local transit or other discounts only through the provider that sets eligibility.
- Keep receipts and note recurring payment dates.

Slow down if someone pressures youBe cautious about paying upfront to “guarantee” a job, home, permit or benefit, or about sending identity documents through an unexpected message. Contact the company or authority using contact details you find independently. If you suspect fraud, contact your bank quickly and follow the police’s official reporting guidance.
