Small things that make a place familiar

Everyday life, at your own pace.

Settling in is more than appointments. Learn the local routines gradually; you do not have to understand everything on your first day.

Local details vary.

Transport, health-service routes, opening hours and local rules differ by city and can change. Check current information from your municipality, service provider or transport operator.

❄️

Seasons and daylight

Finland has big seasonal differences. Winter brings cold, ice and short daylight, especially in the north; summer brings long bright evenings. Conditions vary by region and year. Check the forecast, wear layers, use shoes with grip on icy paths and allow extra travel time when conditions are poor.

Useful habits: keep reflective details visible in the dark, dry wet clothes and shoes, and ask locally about safe winter cycling or walking routes.

Finnish, Swedish and English

Finnish and Swedish are Finland’s national languages. English is widely used in many settings, especially in cities, but availability is not guaranteed for every service. A few Finnish phrases can make everyday interactions easier; ask whether interpretation or service in another language is available when a matter is important.

Hello / hi
Hei / Moi
Thank you
Kiitos
Could you speak more slowly, please?
Voisitteko puhua hitaammin, kiitos?

Shopping and services

Many shops display prices in euros; opening hours vary, and public holidays can affect them. Keep receipts for returns and check a shop’s own return terms, especially for sale or online purchases. Pharmacies are marked apteekki. For recycling, use the labels on local collection bins and municipal guidance.

Finding healthcare

Where to seek non-urgent care can depend on your location and access rights. Check your wellbeing services county’s instructions, your occupational healthcare provider if you have one, or your private insurer/provider. Call 112 only for an emergency where immediate help is needed.

Bring a list of current medicines and allergies to an appointment if relevant. Do not post personal health details into this website; it has no health intake or medical advice function.

Nature and being outdoors

Forests, lakes and public outdoor areas are close to many communities. Outdoor access comes with responsibilities: respect homes and cultivated land, avoid litter, and check local restrictions, fire warnings and protected-area rules before an activity. Conditions and hazards can change quickly.

A friendly first-week routine

Pick one small errand each day: learn the route to a shop, save the local transport app, find the library, practice one phrase, or locate the building’s recycling point. Familiarity grows through repetition.
